The Truth about Teen Marijuana use and Brain Development

Understanding the Effects of Marijuana on the Developing Brain

Marijuana usage can and does affect the brain in both the short and long term. The main psychoactive ingredient, THC alters how brain cells communicate by attaching to receptors involved in memory, focus, emotion, and coordination. While this can lead to the sensation of feeling “high,” it can also cause short-term problems  like poor memory, trouble concentrating, slower reaction time, and in some cases, anxiety or paranoia.

Because the brain continues developing until around age 25, marijuana usage during this period can interfere with how the brain forms important  neural connections. Using cannabis before age 18 has been linked to lasting issues with attention, memory, and learning. These changes may persist even after a person stops using marijuana.

What the Numbers show

According to the National Institute on Drug abuse,  in 2023, nearly 30% of high school seniors reported using marijuana in the past year. Daily usage amongst teens has more than doubled over the past decade, with one in 16 high school seniors now using it daily or near daily. Potency has also largely increased, today's marijuana contains three times more THC than it did in the 1990s, making its effects stronger and potentially more harmful to the developing brain.

Long Term Risks

When used regularly, especially during adolescence marijuana can impact brain development. It can make it harder to focus, retain information, and stay motivated. In some individuals, especially those with a family history of mental illness, heavy marijuana use  has been linked to a higher risk of psychosis, a serious mental condition involving delusions, hallucinations, and a loss of connection to reality.

Why This Matters

Understanding how marijuana affects the brain helps parents, teens, and educators make informed decisions especially when it comes to mental health, academic performance, and emotional well being. Understanding these risks allows families to take action now before long term harm occurs

How we can help you:

At NeuroSynchrony Health, we understand how marijuana use especially during the teen and young adult years—can affect brain function, emotional health, and long-term well-being.

That’s why we offer TMS treatment to help support recovery from the cognitive and emotional effects of substance use. TMS uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in motivation, impulse control, and mood regulation areas often impacted by marijuana and other substances.

TMS has shown promising results as a tool to reduce cravings, improve focus, and rebalance brain activity in individuals struggling with substance use.

Combined with our brain mapping (EEG), and customized support plans, we help teens and young adults take meaningful steps towards long-term brain health and personal growth. If you’re worried about someone you know who may be struggling with marijuana use, we offer safe, science-based treatment options — and we’re here to help.
